What is CBD, cbd studios

What is CBD?

Simply put, CBD is one of the 104 cannabinoids (chemical compounds) found in the cannabis plant. It is extracted from industrial hemp plants and added to a carrier oil to be ingested orally, vaped or used externally on the body.

Does CBD make you high?

No, CBD itself does not give you the mind-altering “high” associated with marijuana.  The name cannabis is the family name of a variety of different species, of which hemp and marijuana are both members. Marijuana contains a chemical called THC, which is what gives the mind-altering high when smoked or ingested. CBD is made from hemp and contains such an insignificant amount of THC that it absolutely does not produce mind-altering psychoactive effects. Because of its link to the marijuana THC-containing plant, it has caused much confusion and been grouped in the same category.

What is hemp?

Hemp is a truly remarkable plant that has been used in a variety of widespread and diverse ways for literally thousands of years. Hemp seeds are now being recognised in the health food market for being high in unsaturated fats; they can be eaten raw or cooked, made into dairy-free milk, or used in beauty products. The fibres of the plant can also be used in the production of textiles.

More recently, people are researching and responding to the health and medical benefits of the plant. The growing of hemp is still illegal in some places but laws and opinions are changing due to education and research.

Hemp is also used for making CBD oil, which is extracted by a variety of processes. CO2 extraction is widely the most acclaimed method.  At a low temperature it puts carbon dioxide under pressure. This gas becomes a liquid and is passed through the plant and extracts the CBD with it.

Cannabinoids are produced naturally in the body as part of the endocannabinoid system and are responsible for homeostasis in the body. Their 2 receptors are CB1 and CB2, which are stimulated by the CBD produced in the body. CB1 receptors are found in the nervous system and brain, while CB2 receptors are found in the immune system and gastrointestinal system. Both these receptors are important in maintaining cardiovascular activity, appetite, mood, memory and pain.
